Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has slammed Arsenal for their "ugly brand of football" while admitting that he badly wanted Liverpool to beat the Gunners in their Premier League clash on Sunday. The Reds eventually edged a very tentative contest at Anfield thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai's outstanding free-kick in the 83rd minute.

  WHAT HAPPENED?

  Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane were among those to raise questions over the Gunners' style of play under Arteta in their loss against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. After an intense battle for more than 80 minutes, the hosts finally got the breakthrough as Szoboszlai's thunderous free-kick from 25 yards sealed a crucial victory for his side.

  Former United and Denmark goalkeeper Schmeichel was also critical of Arteta as he labelled Arsenal's style of football "ugly" and "annoying". The Red Devils icon even admitted that he wanted his formerly bitter rivals Liverpool to win the clash.

• WHAT SCHMEICHEL SAID

  Speaking on Viaplay after the game, Schmeichel said: "I have never in my life, ever, wanted a team to win a game of football more than Liverpool today. Arsenal bring an ugly brand of football to our game. Arteta… let your team play football! Let them loose, let them be free! I am absolutely convinced that if Arteta does this, they will win more games."

  At the half-time break, the 61-year-old had said: "You need two teams to give a good game of football and there is only one team trying to play football, and that's Liverpool. I don't want to insult Arsenal but their brand of football is so annoying to watch. It's designed to exploit opponents while watching for set pieces."

  WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?

  Arteta has a lot of things to worry about during the international break, as several first-team players are currently nursing injuries. Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka were ruled out of the Liverpool clash, and William Saliba was forced off the pitch with an ankle injury within five minutes of kick-off. Arsenal next face Nottingham Forest on September 13.
