Manchester United are in the market for a new boss after Ruben Amorim departed, and they could now be set to turn to a Premier League manager to take the club forward.

Man Utd set to appoint caretaker manager to see out season

The Red Devils parting company with Amorim after their draw away to Leeds United has sparked much debate over who should take over at Old Trafford, given the need for calm following a turbulent few years on and off the field.

Admittedly, the former Sporting boss had a mixed reign at the club, and uncertainty followed his every move alongside regular scrutiny. Nevertheless, the 40-year-old has stabilised the club after a dreadful 2025 period, and they remain in the fight to secure continental qualification at the halfway point in the campaign.

Internally, Manchester United are set to hire a short-term manager until the summer, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the frame to return to Old Trafford after making himself available to take on the challenge.

Fabrizio Romano explained the situation on X, stating: “Manchester United, aware of Ole Gunnar Solksjær being keen on return even on a six month contract. Solskjær would love to be back and help Man United as caretaker manager. #MUFC start internal process today to assess short-term options — then new permanent manager from June.”

At the same time, former Barcelona boss Xavi is in negotiations with the Red Devils that are expected to advance, signalling that there may now be progress towards a long-term solution to replace Amorim. That said, Oliver Glasner is said to be a frontrunner and another Premier League alternative lies in the form of Andoni Iraola.

Either way, nothing is set in stone at this point, although one of Manchester United’s league rivals are beginning to become worried that their manager may be the one to succeed the 40-year-old.

Man Utd could make approach for Fulham's Marco Silva

According to The Sun, Fulham fear that Manchester United may make an approach for Marco Silva as his contract at Craven Cottage is set to expire this summer.

Despite holding talks over an extension, the Portuguese boss has stalled on committing his future to the club since November and is said to want his ambitions reflected by the West Londoners on and off the pitch.

Favouring a 4-2-3-1 formation, Silva has won 95 out of his 208 matches in charge of Fulham, while also recording 39 draws and 74 losses.

Known for his attractive style of football, the 48-year-old also won the Championship back in 2022. Nevertheless, the step up in expectation between his current employers and leading Manchester United would be stark in contrast.

Now a Premier League veteran after stints at Everton and Watford, Silva has been described as “one of the best managers in the Premier League” by Fulham defender Calvin Bassey. He may now be attainable in the short to medium term and this will likely play into his hands should the Red Devils struggle to land other managerial targets.
